Seminário Maior de Coimbra
The rehabilitation project of the Seminário Maior de Coimbra, classified as a National Monument, combined a multidisciplinary and knowledge-based approach with a deep respect for the building’s authenticity.
Concept & Challenge
The project aimed to rehabilitate the building, classified as national monument, ensuring adequate safety and usability conditions while preserving its original architectural, constructive and structural value. The proposed interventions, based on a detailed survey and thorough diagnosis, sought minimum-impact solutions consistent with the new architectural proposal and in accordance with the principles established by the International Charters and Recommendations for conservation.
Approach & Methodology
The project was guided by a multidisciplinary and knowledge-based approach focused on understanding the existing structure. Through detailed inspections, research, and non-destructive testing, the team identified and analysed key structural issues, developing well-informed solutions that ensured the building’s stability, authenticity, and long-term preservation.
Solution & Results
The project introduced structural solutions that respected the building’s identity, using traditional materials and techniques guided by the principles of reversibility, compatibility, and minimal intervention. A structural health monitoring system was installed to track the building’s performance over time and to assess the potential need for future complementary measures. Additionally, new supporting structural volumes were also designed, namely two towers that provide vertical circulation between the different floors of the main building.
The intervention project of the Seminário Maior de Coimbra, National Monument, combined technical expertise and heritage sensitivity within a multidisciplinary approach. The intervention ensured the preservation, enhancement, and functionality of this remarkable historic ensemble.
