Igreja de São Francisco
Structural Inspection and Diagnosis and Intervention Design of the S. Francisco do Porto Church, classified as a National Monument, with the objective of assessing its structural condition and defining rehabilitation measures to ensure durability and structural safety.
Concept & Challenge
The building, classified as a National Monument, showed signs of degradation affecting both structural and decorative elements as a result of natural ageing. The challenge was to define an effective rehabilitation strategy that ensured structural safety and functionality while fully respecting the building’s identity and heritage value.
Approach & Methodology
The structural assessment of the church was carried out through a rigorous campaign of inspections and non-destructive testing, essential given the building’s construction characteristics and high heritage significance. The adopted solutions combine traditional techniques with principles of compatibility and reversibility, ensuring the preservation and enhancement of the building’s heritage value.
Solution & Results
The structural inspection and diagnostic work allowed the definition of consolidation and rehabilitation measures compatible with the existing structure and focused on correcting the identified anomalies. These measures provided a solid technical basis for the development of the intervention project.
The non-invasive assessment methods employed enabled the accurate identification of existing defects and their causes, supporting the definition of appropriate intervention solutions fully compatible with the building’s characteristics and its high heritage value.
