Igreja da Memória
Structural Assessment of the Church of Memory in Lisbon, classified as a Portuguese National Monument, with the aim of assessing its structural conservation condition and defining rehabilitation measures to ensure its durability and safety.
Concept & Challenge
The building exhibited signs of material degradation, particularly in the stone masonry structure forming the walls and roof of the church, as well as in the timber floors of the tribune and choir loft. The main challenge consisted in defining suitable intervention solutions that would effectively address the identified anomalies while ensuring compatibility with the existing structure and compliance with the requirements associated with its heritage classification.
Approach & Methodology
The structural assessment of the church was carried out through a detailed campaign of inspections and non-destructive testing, using, among other methods, a videoscope and a resistograph. The adoption of a non-invasive assessment approach proved essential, given the construction characteristics and the heritage value of the building.
Solution & Results
The structural inspection and diagnosis work made it possible to define consolidation and rehabilitation measures aimed at addressing the identified anomalies while ensuring compatibility with the existing structure. These measures formed the basis for the proper development of the structural and conservation/restoration projects.
The work carried out, using non-invasive analysis methods, made it possible to accurately identify the existing anomalies and their causes, defining intervention solutions that are both appropriate and fully compatible with the building’s characteristics and its high heritage value.
