Miguel Bombarda Warehouses - Sogrape
A comprehensive programme of structural survey and diagnosis was carried out on the existing roof structures of the Miguel Bombarda Warehouses, in Vila Nova de Gaia. The study covered approximately 6.000 m² of roof structures with different structural configurations and aimed to assess the state of conservation and define global intervention measures.
Concept & Challenge
The main challenge was to evaluate the structural condition and load-bearing capacity of extensive roof structures in buildings of significant age and value. The objective was to identify degradation mechanisms, assess structural safety and define intervention strategies capable of extending the service life of the roofs while respecting the existing construction and materials.
Approach & Methodology
The work involved multiple technical site visits, detailed visual inspections and structural surveys, complemented by in situ non-destructive testing of structural elements. This approach enabled a rigorous assessment of material condition, structural configuration and degradation processes, with particular focus on moisture-related pathologies and biological attacks affecting the timber structures.
Solution & Results
The structural survey and diagnostic work provided a clear technical basis to support strategic decisions regarding the future rehabilitation of the roof structures. The assessment helped define both the intervention needs and priorities, enabling the development of proportionate and efficient solutions, from targeted strengthening to more comprehensive measures where required, while prioritising compatibility with the existing construction, structural performance and long-term durability.
Providing clarity on condition, priorities and intervention needs, this project delivered a robust technical foundation to guide efficient, compatible and durable rehabilitation of complex roof structures.
