Central London R.C. Building
A comprehensive programme of structural inspection and diagnosis was carried out on a partially constructed reinforced concrete building located in London, to assess its condition and suitability for future development. The work provided a robust technical basis to support decision-making regarding the reuse, repair or replacement of existing structural elements.
Concept & Challenge
The prolonged exposure of a partially completed reinforced concrete structure raised concerns regarding durability, reinforcement condition and long-term structural performance. The main challenge was to accurately assess the state of conservation of the existing structure and determine its capacity to be safely integrated into the next phases of construction.
Approach & Methodology
A detailed inspection and diagnostic programme was implemented, combining visual surveys, non-destructive testing and selective intrusive investigations. The methodology included rebar detection and cover surveys, carbonation depth and chloride content testing, electrical resistivity measurements, and the inspection of reinforcement details and mechanical couplers across foundations, basement levels and ground floor slabs.
Solution & Results
The inspection and diagnostic work provided a clear and reliable technical basis to support informed decision-making regarding the future development of the building. The results enabled the identification of appropriate strategies for the integration of existing structural elements into subsequent construction phases, supporting the definition of targeted intervention measures and ensuring a safe, efficient and technically robust progression of the project.
