Viaduct Arcos de Valdevez
A non-destructive rebar survey onsite campaign on a reinforced concrete viaduct ensured the safe installation of a new wastewater pipeline, protecting the viaduct integrity and enabling a fast and efficient intervention.
Concept & Challenge
The installation of a new wastewater pipeline on an existing viaduct required precise knowledge of the rebar layout within the concrete deck. The main challenge was to guarantee safe fixing solutions while avoiding any damage to the existing reinforcement, thereby preserving the structural safety and durability of the viaduct.
Approach & Methodology
A campaign of non-destructive testing was carried out using Ferroscan® PS 300 equipment to accurately locate the reinforcement bars within the concrete. Access to the inspection areas was ensured through an articulated elevating work platform and direct access near the abutments, allowing full coverage of the fixing zones.
Solution & Results
The investigation enabled the precise identification of rebar-free zones suitable for drilling and anchoring the new pipeline supports. This information provided a reliable technical basis for the safe execution of the works, minimising risks, avoiding damage to the structure and ensuring an efficient and controlled intervention on the viaduct.
