Supreme Court of Justice
The Supreme Court of Justice in Lisbon was the subject of an integrated programme of structural inspection and diagnosis and the development of the Stability Design, supporting the rehabilitation of the building’s façades and roof. The intervention enhanced safety and serviceability while preserving and valuing the building’s architectural, constructive and heritage significance.
Concept & Challenge
The rehabilitation of a building classified as a National Monument, integrated within a highly valuable historic ensemble, posed the challenge of intervening on the façades and roof while ensuring safety and functionality without compromising the building’s original characteristics. The objective was to develop technically robust solutions, fully compatible with the existing construction and aligned with international conservation principles.
Approach & Methodology
The work was based on an exhaustive survey of the building’s construction elements and existing defects, supported by a detailed assessment of the structural condition. Relevant historical documentation was reviewed, including previous studies developed for the façades facing Praça do Comércio, ensuring full compatibility with the surrounding urban and heritage context.
Solution & Results
The adopted solutions prioritised the rehabilitation of existing construction elements, using traditional materials and techniques whenever possible to minimise the impact of the intervention. The project ensured improved safety, durability and functionality while preserving and enhancing the building’s architectural and heritage value.
The integrated structural inspection and stability design enabled the rehabilitation of the façades and roof, ensuring enhanced safety and functionality while fully respecting the building’s original construction and heritage significance.
