Quinta da Aveleda
The need to create a new space for a shop and tasting room led to the conversion of the Adega Velha area at Quinta da Aveleda. The structural survey carried out on the existing building enabled an assessment of its safety and state of conservation, supporting its adaptation to a new functional programme associated with wine tourism.
Concept & Challenge
The main challenge was to adapt an existing building, originally used for the storage of spirit liquor, to new functions as a shop and tasting room, while ensuring the maintenance of the storage conditions for Adega Velha. The intervention sought to preserve structural elements with adequate performance, while simultaneously ensuring safety, functionality and enhancement of the space.
Approach & Methodology
The intervention began with a structural survey and diagnosis of the existing building. The reinforced concrete floor slab was retained following verification of its load-bearing capacity through load testing. The roof, which exhibited significant deficiencies in terms of conservation and safety, was subject to a detailed assessment that supported its replacement.
Solution & Results
The existing roof was replaced with a new timber structure with a structural configuration similar to the original, ensuring compatibility with the building and respect for its identity. The adopted solution allowed the existing storage conditions for Adega Velha spirits to be maintained, while enabling the building’s transformation and adaptation for wine tourism, ensuring safety, functionality and added value.
The conversion of the Adega Velha at Quinta da Aveleda was distinguished by the balance achieved between conservation, functional adaptation and respect for the existing structure, giving the building a new life without compromising its original use.
