Peniche Defensive City Walls
Structural assessment of the Peniche Defensive Walls, which enabled the precise identification of critical conservation needs. A robust rehabilitation strategy was defined, preserving the historical value and ensuring the structural safety of the monument.
Concept & Challenge
The Peniche Walls, one of the most significant historic defensive complexes in Portugal, displayed signs of degradation associated with natural aging, maritime exposure and successive interventions over time. The central challenge was to rigorously understand their conservation state, identify structural and constructive anomalies, and define an intervention strategy that fully respected the historical and cultural values of the monument.
Approach & Methodology
NCREP carried out a detailed construction survey and an integrated assessment of the identified anomalies, using specialised inspection techniques. The adopted methodology followed recognised conservation principles, ensuring a balance between heritage preservation and structural requirements.
Solution & Results
Guiding intervention principles were established, focusing on the conservation and enhancement of the architectural and structural features of the defensive walls. The study allowed the identification of priorities, the assessment of risks, and the proposal of rehabilitation strategies compatible with the monument’s authenticity, ensuring its protection for future generations.
A comprehensive assessment of the Peniche Walls was carried out, identifying critical conservation needs. The study defined a robust rehabilitation strategy that respects the historical value of the monument, providing a solid technical basis for the preservation of this emblematic heritage site.
