Melo Leote Street
Built in the 1940s on a narrow and elongated plot typical of Porto, the building is arranged over three storeys, with two façades and a rear garden. In a poor state of conservation and with spatial limitations in relation to the clients’ requirements, our work comprised the structural assessment of the existing building, the structural design for its rehabilitation, and the definition of strengthening and extension solutions, ensuring compatibility with the existing elements and overall structural integrity.
Concept & Challenge
The main challenge was to rehabilitate a single-family residential building with a high level of structural degradation, ensuring safety, stability and functionality, while preserving the identity of the existing elements that still demonstrated adequate performance.
Approach & Methodology
The work began with a rigorous structural survey, enabling the assessment of the building’s overall structural behaviour and conservation state. Based on this information, the structural design was developed and a compatible structural solution was defined, integrating timber and timber–concrete composite systems, while coordinating all the engineering disciplines involved.
Solution & Results
The intervention implemented a timber and timber–concrete composite structural solution, compatible with the existing elements to be kept, ensuring stability, safety and durability. This approach enabled the efficient rehabilitation of the building, balancing the preservation of the existing fabric with the integration of modern and functional construction solutions.
The project was distinguished by the combination of rigorous diagnosis, localised strengthening and the integration of modern solutions, allowing the building to be transformed and extended without compromising its safety or historic identity.
