IAP Palace

The IAP Palace was the subject of an integrated programme of structural inspection and diagnosis, supporting its rehabilitation and conversion into the Headquarters of Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto. The intervention successfully balanced the preservation of the building’s heritage value with the functional and safety requirements of its new use.

Concept & Challenge

The adaptation of a historic building, shaped by different construction phases and structural systems, posed the challenge of ensuring structural safety and performance without compromising its heritage identity. The objective was to meet new functional requirements while respecting the principles of compatibility, reversibility and minimal intervention.

Approach & Methodology

A comprehensive programme of structural inspection and diagnosis was carried out, including construction surveys, document analysis and an extensive campaign of in situ and non-destructive testing. This approach enabled the characterisation of materials, identification of defects and a clear understanding of the building’s actual structural behaviour, forming a solid basis for the development of the design project.

Solution & Results

The adopted solutions prioritised the conservation of the existing structure, with localised strengthening introduced only where necessary and the controlled integration of new structural elements. The intervention ensured the building’s safety, functionality and durability, enhancing its heritage value and enabling its sustainable future use.

The rehabilitation of the IAP Palace was supported by a rigorous structural inspection and diagnostic programme, enabling its conversion to new use while preserving its heritage value. The intervention ensured safety, functionality and durability through compatible and minimally invasive solutions.
